Gender-Diverse Experiences of Discrimination In Mental Health Settings
Overview:
You are being invited to participate in a study being done by Andie Brookens, from Northern Arizona University!
The purpose of the study is to better understand the experiences of gender-diverse individuals in mental healthcare settings. Specifically, it aims to evaluate the way gender-diverse individuals may experience discrimination in these settings, as well as the rate at which they may experience it. Previous studies have indicated that transgender individuals likely experience high rates of identity-based discrimination within mental health treatment, leading to poor mental health outcomes. This study aims to investigate this topic among a range of diverse gender-identities.
To be eligible to participate in this study, you must
● Be over 18 years old
● Be fluent in English
● Identify as gender-diverse in some way (non-cisgender)
● Have received some form of formal mental health treatment
If you consent to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete an anonymous online survey via Qualtrics that will take approximately 20-25 minutes. The survey will include questions regarding your gender-identity, experience with mental healthcare, experiences of gender-based discrimination, and past/current emotional well-being. No personally identifying information will be requested or gathered by this study.
Potential risks associated with this study may include emotional distress or discomfort with regard to answering questions about experiences of discrimination and mental health (including recent symptoms of depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, etc.). Otherwise, there are no physical risks associated with this study. Throughout the survey, links to relevant mental health resources will be available if you require support.
Given current sociopolitical threats to the LGBTQ+ community, no compensation is offered for participation in this study, so that no potentially identifying information (such as email addresses or IP addresses needed to dispense compensation) is ever at risk of being leaked. As such, there are no direct personal benefits associated with participation in this study. However, the data gathered may highlight patterns of gender-based discrimination among mental health professionals and lead to further research on how best to improve mental healthcare for gender-diverse individuals.
