Developing an Inclusive Measure of Financial Hardship for People Living with Dementia and Their Care Contributors

Overview:
By 2030, 1 million U.S. adults aged 50 and older who identify as LGBTQIA+ or any other sexual or gender minority (SGM) will suffer from Alzheimer's disease and associated dementias (AD/ADRD). SGM older persons living with dementia (PLWD) often face unique challenges due to their higher likelihood of being single, living alone, or lacking familial support. They frequently experience greater financial hardship stemming from income disparities, limited savings opportunities, and reduced access to legal and social programs. The purpose of this study is to develop a measurement tool to better assess financial strain and its relation to quality of life for people living with memory loss and their care contributors, including LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ people.
