Washington, DC - GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ+ Equality is excited to announce its selection as a host organization for the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) 2024 Leading Edge Fellowship Program. Beginning September 3, 2024, GLMA will welcome Mirtha Garcia Reyes, PhD to the GLMA staff for a two-year placement as GLMA's LGBTQ+ Health Equity Research Specialist.

The LGBTQ+ Health Equity Research Specialist will play a pivotal role in stewarding GLMA’s research priorities to advance LGBTQ+ health equity, including supporting our Lesbian Health Fund advisory committee and GLMA’s research partnerships. Utilizing a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, the Research Specialist will also complete a research project that aims to uncover the multifaceted consequences of gender-affirming care bans on healthcare professionals and patients, culminating in a series of comprehensive reports with actionable recommendations.

"We are delighted to welcome Mirtha Garcia Reyes as our LGBTQ+ Health Equity Research Fellow,” said Alex Sheldon, MA, Executive Director of GLMA. “Mirtha’s extensive research experience and dedication to promoting health equity within LGBTQ+ communities make her an invaluable addition to our team. The inclusion of a dedicated researcher to GLMA's staff significantly enhances our capacity to advance a fundamental aspect of our mission. We are honored that GLMA has been selected by ACLS to host this Fellowship."

The ACLS Leading Edge Fellowship program aims to demonstrate the potential of humanistic knowledge and methods to solve problems, build capacity, and advance social justice and equity. The fellowships support recent PhDs in the humanities and interpretive social sciences as they work with social justice organizations in communities across the United States. GLMA is thrilled about the incredible opportunity to enhance our capacity to engage in research that impacts the LGBTQ+ community. Our team eagerly anticipates collaborating with Mirtha Garcia Reyes and gaining valuable insights from her experiences.
