To pass on your values of LGBT health care equality, and contribute to GLMA’s financial future, please consider including GLMA in your estate planning. There are a number of different options, and your attorney or estate planner can give you more detailed information, but here are a few options.

Retirement Plans and Life Insurance

The assets of retirement plans can face double taxation. Not only is your estate taxed, but your heir may also be required to pay taxes on the remainder. You may prefer to leave other assets to your loved ones, and name GLMA the beneficiary or your 401(k), IRA or pension plan.

At some point in your life, you may have a life insurance policy whose benefit you no longer need. You may want to consider naming GLMA as the beneficiary and assigning us ownership of the policy. This will qualify you for a charitable deduction, and in removing life insurance from your estate, you may also reduce your estate taxes.

Wills and Living Trusts

You can make a gift or bequest to GLMA through your will or living trust in the following ways:

  • A percentage of your total estate: with this method the size of your gift will adjust with the size of your estate.
  • The residue or a percentage of the residue of your estate: this option allows for specific gifts to loved ones to be made first, then the remainder to can go to one or more charitable organizations.
  • A gift of a specific amount allows you to specify a dollar amount to be given to one or more charitable organizations. With this kind of gift, it is especially important for you to keep your will or trust up-to-date.
Sample bequest language for your attorney:

“I give ___% of my estate to the Gay & Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA), a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation.  GLMA is located at 1326 18th Street, Suite 22, Washington, DC  20036.”

After specific gifts are named…
“I give ___ % of the residue of my estate to the Gay & Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA), a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation.  GLMA is located 1326 18th Street, Suite 22, Washington, DC  20036.”

GLMA’s Federal Tax I.D. number

Your attorney may also want GLMA’s tax ID number. It is 94-2901694.
